The Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross was awarded to recognise extreme battlefield bravery or successful military leadership. During his career he was credited with 78 aerial victories. Max-Hermann Lücke was wounded on 23 October 1943, he died in hospital on 8 November 1943 and was posthumously awarded the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross on 6 April 1944.
