Personal
Gallagher grew up in Reno, Nevada. After graduating from high school, he attended Wake Forest University on an ROTC scholarship, where he majored in history. After graduation, he was commissioned a second lieutenant.[1] He was then assigned to the 25th Infantry Division of the U. S. Army in 2005. In December 2005, his platoon was transferred to Iraq and stationed at Sabaa Al-Bour, a village northwest of Baghdad.[2]
He received national media attention in 2008 when his blog Kaboom: A Soldier's War Journal was shut down by the U. S. military[1][2] after he posted an unvetted entry which portrayed a superior officer in an "unflattering light."[3] In 2010, he published the book Kaboom: Embracing the Suck in a Savage Little War.[4]
