Playing career
Carragher started his career at Wigan Athletic in 1993, making his debut in a 6-3 win over Chester.[1] He moved on to Port Vale in 1997, where he was later made captain. He was used sparingly in 1997–98 and 1998–99, before establishing himself in the heart of the Vale defence in 1999–2000. He led the 2001 team to their Football League Trophy final victory, and continued to lead the back line in 2001–02 and 2002–03. He was surprisingly released from Vale in May 2003.[2]
Following his release from Vale he joined Stafford Rangers on non-contract terms, whilst Burton Albion boss Nigel Clough considered whether or not to make him an offer.[3] Instead he signed for Macclesfield Town,[4] before being released by manager Brian Horton in May 2005, the same man who had released him from Vale Park.[5]
