She is currently a presidium member of Bangladesh Awami League,[1] a major political party. She is a Member of Parliament and the minister of agriculture under the prime ministership of Sheikh Hasina. She held this post once before from 1996 to 2001 during the previous tenure of Awami League in power.
She is well known in South Asia for her fiery speeches and her adamant attitude, qualities that have earned her the nickname of Ogni Konna or Girl of Fire. Although she started her political career with the left-wing party, National Awami Party or NAP, she is now one of the most senior leaders of the Awami League.
She was married to the late Bajlur Rahman, editor of The Daily Sangbad, one of the oldest Bangla dailies in existence.
