Career
Mathew Cullen grew up in Inglewood, California, the son of two teachers. At age 23, Cullen founded Los Angeles-based production company Motion Theory. Cullen has overseen the production of over 300 projects in the past decade, and has personally directed and produced over 100 commercials and music videos, including global campaigns for IBM, Nike, HP, Honda, Tanqueray and EA Sports, and music videos for Adele, Beck, Green Day, Katy Perry, Modest Mouse and REM. Most recently, he won two consecutive Grammy Awards for directing Weezer’s “Pork and Beans,” the most blogged-about YouTube video of 2008, and Black Eyed Peas’ “Boom Boom Pow,” which has exceeded 100 million internet views.
Rolling Stone named Cullen on its annual “Hot List” for his work as a music video director, and Wired called him one of six directors who are making music videos cool again. Mathew has been honored with over 100 industry awards, and his work has been inducted into the Museum of Modern Art. Motion Theory was profiled in Fast Company as being one of the most innovative companies in the industry.
In December 2010, Cullen teamed up with director Guillermo del Toro, cinematographer Guillermo Navarro, and executive producer Javier Jimenez to launch Mirada, “a studio designed for storytellers.” Mirada was formed in Los Angeles, CA to be a collaborative space where they and other filmmakers can work with Mirada’s artists to create and produce projects that span digital production and content for film, television, advertising, interactive and other media.
In September 2011, Cullen directed the THINK Exhibit at The Lincoln Center in New York City to celebrate IBM's Centennial, the first time since Charles and Ray Eames' IBM exhibit at the 1964 New York World's Fair.
Cullen is attached to direct a feature film based on an original idea, a supernatural thriller being co-produced with Kurtzman/Orci at DreamWorks. He is also attached to a film based on the Guinness Book of World Records and a political comedy by Daily Show veterans John Oliver and Rory Albanese.
