Country USA Language English Mathematically Alive: A Story of Fandom is an award-winning 2007 documentary film about fans of the New York Mets. Directed, produced and edited by Katherine Foronjy and Joseph Coburn, the film follows a wide variety of fans over the course of the 2005 and 2006 baseball seasons, culminating in an exciting 7 game series against the St. Louis Cardinals in the NLCS. Mathematically Alive shows the emotional attachment that fans develop for their team, and how it can be the source of great joy or tremendous sadness. In addition to the hundreds of fans interviewed for the film, Coburn and Foronjy also caught up with former Mets players Bud Harrelson, Ron Swoboda, Ed Charles, Tim Teuffel, and legendary broadcaster Ralph Kiner. The filmmakers also interviewed Dr. Daniel Wann, a sports psychology professor at Murray State University, who explains many of the psychological characteristics sports fans share. Of particular focus in the film are a group of female Mets fans whose favorite player is former catcher Mike Piazza. They wait for his arrival outside the Shea stadium parking lot on game days, and travelled around the country to see him play even when he was no longer a player on the Mets. More information about the film is available on the official film website here. http://www.mathematicallyalive.com

Praise for Mathematically Alive: A Story of Fandom
“Mathematically Alive captures beautifully the Heart and emotion of rooting for a baseball team. A Must-See for any Mets Fan!” Gary Cohen - broadcaster SNY
“If there’s ever a time for Mets fans to be reminded of their irrepressible capacity for hope, for belief, it is now. ‘Mathematically Alive’ is a celebration of those amazin’ souls who just gotta believe.” Greg Hanlon - Brooklyn Courier
“It is a moving and accurate portrait of Mets fans as a group, and as a phenomenon. We are allowed our uniqueness. After all, being a Mets fan is different from being a fan of other teams. But one of several brilliant things that the filmmakers do is show us how Mets fans exemplify the human race at its best, and arguably, at its healthiest. At the end of this film, you come away with the impression that the world would be a lot better if everyone was like a Mets fan: if everyone derived their greatest pleasures from loyalty, love, and community, and not from anything as flimsy or uncertain as triumph.” Dana Brand - author, Mets Fan
"Mathematically Alive is an engaging film that takes the audience on a ride of events in 2006 that they know the outcome of, and the viewer still clings to hope that on the big screen, Beltran will—let’s pretend—hit a check-swing doinker over first base that drives in two runs and then “Ronnie Belliard overruns the ball…and here comes Anderson Hernandez…with the winning run. The Mets win! The Mets win the pennant!” But that’s Hollywood. This film is made in Flushing, where fans are toughened like steel in purifying fire." Matt Silverman, author, Mets Essential
