Matahari is a major department store chain in Indonesia. Matahari is operated by PT. Matahari Department Store, Tbk. (IDX: LPPF), a subsidiary of PT. Matahari Putra Prima, Tbk. (IDX: MPPA), a publicly traded company. It has the biggest coverage in Indonesia and has a store in almost every mall and plaza in Indonesia.
In Indonesian, matahari means "sun". The Matahari logo resembles the shape of the sun.
Supermarket and Hypermarket
Matahari also runs a retailing business. Nowadays, almost every Matahari Supermarket converts to Hypermart. A hypermarket under PT. Matahari Putra Prima management. It was founded to compete with French giant Carrefour's Indonesian operations.
Both Hypermart and Carrefour compete to be the biggest retailer in Indonesia. Giant Hypermarket, a Malaysian retailer, has a smaller market presence.
