Mata Taua Peak (78°7′S 161°57′E / 78.117°S 161.95°E) is a Maori name meaning "a scout before the troops." Named in reference to the view from this 3,013 m peak. To the northeast, there is an array of rocky peaks; to the southwest, the view overlooks Rampart Ridge and the large Upper Staircase glacier.
