Playing career

Born in New Zealand, Filipo played his junior football with Mangere East Hawks in the Auckland Rugby League competition and the Counties Manukau Jetz in the Bartercard Cup.[1] In 2004 he played a pre-season match for the New Zealand Warriors. In 2005 he was part of a NZRL's Presidents selection that played a trial against the Warriors.[2] In 2006 he was part of the Warriors first grade squad but did not make an appearance.[3]

He left the club at the end of that season, instead joining a feeder club for the Brisbane Broncos.[4] In May he was summoned to the Newcastle Local Court after being involved in an incident at a kebab store. He was sentenced to 300 hours of community service.[5] Filipo failed to settle in Brisbane so briefly switched codes to rugby union before heading home to Otara.

He then returned to Australia, joining the Nelson Bay Northern Blues. Filipo made the 2009 Country Firsts Team, while playing for Nelson Bay Northern Blues in the Newcastle Rugby League competition.[6][7]

He later played for the Central Coast Centurions in 2010 and 2011 in NSW Cup and was named the Centurions Player of the Year in 2010.[8] In 2011 he was named as a member of the first-grade squad for the Newcastle Knights. He made his NRL debut against the New Zealand Warriors in Round 10 at Ausgrid Stadium.

Representative career

Filipo played for the Junior Kiwis in 2004 and 2005.[1][9]
