The Marrar are a Jat gotra, or clan found in the Punjab province of Pakistan, and the state of Punjab in India.[1]

History and origin

The Marrar claim descent from Shinh Chand, a Rajput prince. Historically the tribe was involved in jathera (ancestor) worship, with Shinh Chand's place of burial in Gharchu being treated as a shrine and a place of pilgrimage.[1]

The Marrar now have either converted to Islam or Sikhism. The town of Samana, in Haryana, was seen as to the place of the tribe's original settlement. From their, they moved to Ludhiana in East Punjab, and eventually many have settled in Sialkot and Gujrat districts, in Pakistani Punjab.

They may or may not be connected with the Marhal clan of Jats, which is also associated with the city of Samana.
