On September 15, 2011, Mark announced his candidacy to replace Brian Sonntag, who announced he was not going to seek another term after 20 years as State Auditor for Washington (state).
Personal life
Mark was born and raised in Biloxi, Mississippi. He is a retired officer of the United States Air Force, serving on active duty as a B-52 pilot and as a Contract Manager for 10 years. Mark holds a Bachelor's Degree from the United States Air Force Academy, a Master's of Arts Degree from Chapman University, and a Master's of Business Administration from the University of North Dakota. He also has been educated at Harvard's Kennedy School of Government, completing the Leadership program.
Mark has resided in Federal Way, Washington with his wife Meschell, his three children, and his grandchildren for the last 25 years.
Professional career
Mark is currently a Substitute Teacher for the Federal Way School District and the Seattle Catholic Archdiocese. Mark has previously been employed as the Industrial Services Director for Tacoma Goodwill Industries, the Executive Director of Federal Way Youth and Family Services, and as a Commissioner for the Lakehaven Utility District. Mark is active in his community, participating in many roles. He sits on the Board of Directors for the Federal Way Boys and Girls Club, is a member of St. Vincent's Knights of Columbus, and is a member of the Federal Way Chamber of Commerce.
Political career
Mark serves as a member of the Washington State House of Representatives, having first been elected in 1998 by the residents of the 30th Legislative District, an area that includes Federal Way, Algona, and portions of Auburn and Pacific.
Committee assignments for his current term include: House General Government Appropriations and Oversight, House Labor & Workforce Development, House Legislative Evaluation & Accountability, and the Joint Administrative Rules Committee.
In September 2011, Mark announced that he intended to run to become the next Washington State Auditor following the announcement by incumbent Brian Sonntag that he would not seek a sixth term.
