He was selected 18th overall in the 2011 NHL Entry Draft by the Chicago Blackhawks, and he was also selected by Vityaz Chekhov in the 5th round (112th overall) of the 2011 KHL Junior Draft.[1]
He was raised in Edmonton, Alberta. He was born in Langley, British Columbia.
