Mari music is the music of the Volga-Finnic Mari people of Russia. Mari music is generally pentatonic.[1]
Song
Mari songs are generally short and lyrical.[1] Common themes include the Volga river, and a love of nature, to include forests and rainbows.[2]
Musical instruments
Mari instruments include the kusle or karsh (similar to the Finnish kantele, a small zither), though some Mari play the similar Russian gusli. The Mari also play tumyr (drum), accordions, and a Mari bagpipe, the shuvyr.
