Marek Kukula is the public astronomer at the Royal Observatory Greenwich. The purpose of this post is to engage the public on astronomy.[1] He started working in this post in August 2008, and since then has made many media appearances including Al Jazeera UK, the Today Programme on Radio 4 and the One Show. He has worked as a researcher, specialising in the fields of active galactic nuclei and quasars. He has used a variety of telescopes, including the Hubble Space Telescope.[2] He graduated in physics and astronomy with a B.Sc (Hons) (First class) from Manchester University in 1990, having previously been awarded the Hatfield scholarship in 1989 (awarded to the most outstanding student in the astronomy exams). In 1993 he was awarded a doctorate in astronomy from Manchester University, based at the radio observatory at Jodrell Bank. He subsequently worked as a post-doctoral research associate at Liverpool John Moores, Royal Observatory Edinburgh, as well as the Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore.
