Manuel Vieira Pinto was born in São Pedro de Aboim, Mozambique, ordained a priest on August 7, 1949. Silva was appointed bishop (later Archbishop) of the Archdiocese of Nampula on April 21, 1967 and ordained on June 29, 1967. Pinto would retire from the Nampula on November 16, 2000. Manuel Pinto would briefly serve as Apostolic Administrator to the Diocese of Pemba from 1992-1998.
