Mangal (font)

Mangal (font)
The font name 'Mangal' written in Devanagari script using Mangal font

Mangal is an OpenType Font for the Devanagari script that is included as part of Microsoft Windows' optional support for Indic text in Windows XP and subsequent Windows versions. It is the default font for all languages which are in the Devanagari script, including Hindi, Marathi, Nepali and Sanskrit. It is developed and by Microsoft Corporation.[1]

Issues with typographic ligatures

Mangal's incorrect of the ट् + ठ = ट्ठ ligature (left) with the appearance of this ligature in Arial Unicode MS (right).

Mangal does not correctly handle ligatures where characters are joined to the right of द, ड, ढ, ट and ठ. They are, however, properly handled by Arial Unicode MS, which ships with Microsoft Office. Similarly it also can not correctly handle ligatures where characters (e.g. ङ् & ञ्) are joined to the bottom of क, ग and च, ज respectively e.g. in गङ्गा and चञ्चल.
