They defeated Everton 1-0 in the FA Cup final to win the trophy for the sixth time, and finished third in the league. It was the first season at the club for wingers Gordon Strachan and Jesper Olsen, while Mark Hughes became established in the forward line alongside Frank Stapleton, taking over from Norman Whiteside, who was moved into the centre of midfield to replace Ray Wilkins.
