History
On August 13, 2009, Holiday World & Splashin' Safari announced the addition of Wildebeest, a ProSlide Hydromagnetic Rocket for their 2010 season.[1] On May 7, 2010, Wildebeest opened to the public as the world's longest water coaster at 1,710 feet (520 m) in length.[2][3] On August 3, 2011, Holiday World & Splashin' Safari announced the addition of a second ProSlide Hydromagnetic Rocket, Mammoth, scheduled to open for their 2012 season.[4] Unlike Wildebeest's 4 seater inline tubes, Mammoth will seat 6 riders in new, circular, Clover Wheel tubes.[5][6] The ride will be 53 feet (16 m) longer than Wildebeest taking over the title of the world's longest water coaster.[4][7] Costing $9 million, Mammoth is expected to open by May 2012.[8]
Ride
Riders will board one of ten Clover Wheel tubes which each sit 6 people in a circular fashion facing inwards.[5] The ride will begin with a conveyor belt lift to a height of 69 feet (21 m). On a 45 degree angle the ride then drops 53 feet (16 m) before navigating a 1,710-foot (520 m) long course of drops and electromagnetic powered hills.[9][10][11]
Technology
Mammoth is a ProSlide Hydromagnetic Rocket. Hydromagnetic Rockets rely on Linear Induction Motors (LIMs) to power rafts up hills. A large magnet is located on the underside of the raft to make this possible. Mammoth will be the first Mammoth Rocket (a Rocket with 6 seats) to be installed worldwide.[5] This particular ride type was first announced at the International Association of Amusement Parks and Attractions (IAAPA) Expo in 2010.[5]
Records
When Mammoth opens in 2012, it will gain the title of the "World's Longest Water Coaster" from Wildebeest.[4]
