History
The platform launched in July 2010 as a unique initiative in the region to attract and discover musical talent across different genres. The first iteration began in September 2010 and concluded in December 2010.
The platform runs in English and Arabic, where registered users can upload profiles which showcase their music and detailed information about them or their bands.
First Winner
The winning profile from Makshoof Music’s first iteration belonged to Egyptian singer/songwriter Shady Ahmed [1]. The decision came after an extensive voting process which took into consideration public votes as well as a jury decision. The jury included Adam Grundey from Rolling Stone Middle East in addition to other music industry professionals [2]. In January 2011, Shady Ahmed was awarded recording time at a Dubai based studio as well as a host of other opportunities, such as a performance on Dubai One TV [3] and a segment on City 7 TV [4].
The first iteration of Makshoof Music included 36 different artist and band profiles from the following countries:
- Bahrain
- Egypt
- Jordan
- Lebanon
- Syria
- UAE
The Re-launch of Makshoof Music
The platform is expected to re-launch in June 2011.
Makshoof Music has recently partnered with EMI Arabia to offer Middle Eastern talent the chance to be on the second volume of the Rock the Kasbah compilation [5].
