Makara us a surname found in Britain and Ireland. Makara is ancient personal name and surname of Brythonic and Goidelic origin.

The name Makara may be derived from the Irish Gaelic phrase "mo cara" (pronounced "muh karra") meaning "my friend"[1]

The Celtic slang term for a friend ("mucker") has its origin in the term "mo chara" and became the title of an Edgar Rice Burroughs novel in 1914 (The Mucker). Recently, the girl's name Kara, meaning "friend", has regained popularity in Celtic cultures.
