Majid Kavian (1982 &ndash September 7, 1999) (Persian: مجید کاویان), also known as Semko Sarholdan was the deupty commander of the militant Party of Free Life of Kurdistan (PJAK) until his death on September 3, 2011,^[1] at the age of 29.^[2] As the number 2 in command^[3] he was the chief commander of all PJAK's armed activities^[4] as the PJAK's number 1 leader, Abdul Rahman Haji Ahmadi lives in exile, in Germany.^[5]

Majid Kavian was born in the town of Baneh in the Kurdistan Province of Iran^[4] in 1982.^[2] He joined the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) in its conflict with Turkey in 1999, during which he fought in the Dersim and Black Sea regions.^[6] He joined the PJAK in 2003,^[2][7][8] were he rose to position of Deputy Commander due to his experience, fighting in Turkey.^[6] He was killed by IRGC forces during the 2011 Iran-Iraq cross-border raids, while leading an operation in Kutaman^[4] when he was hit by a shrapnel from tank fire.^[7]

The PJAK confirmed his death on their website, releasing the following statement:^[6]

"September 3rd 2011, during the second stage of Iranian Revolutionary Guards attack against Kandil mountains Majid Kawian, known as Comrade Samkou, deputy commander general of the forces of eastern Kurdistan in the Party of Free Life of Kurdistan, was killed along with Comrade Ruzhat Butan after being hit by a mortar in heavy Iranian shelling in Kutaman region"
