The Maine gubernatorial election of 2002 took place on November 5, 2002. Incumbent Independent Governor Angus King was term limited, and unable to seek re-election. The general election saw second congressional district representative John Baldacci face off against South Portland businessman Peter Cianchette as well as Jonathan Carter of the Green Independent Party, and Independent John Michael.
The primary election was held upon June 11, 2002. Baldacci faced no primary challengers [1]. Cianchette, on the other hand, had to face off with a challenger - James Libby - but defeated him by just over a two to one margin [2]. Jonathan Carter faced no competition in the primary.
