Assuming the office January 2011, he became the first-ever African American president for the organization.[1] In addition to serving as the President of the PFFW, he still has a host of other commitments including being the president of the "Sable Flames," the African American firefighters of the City of Madison Fire Department.
Career
Prior to his election as President of the Fire Fighter's Association and currently, Mitchell has been a firefighter for more than 13 years in The City of Madison and was promoted to lieutenant in 2010.[2] Lt. Mitchell was soon sought out by the national media as a critic of Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker’s collective bargaining changes, which prompted weeks of demonstrations in Madison but exempted Mitchell's members. He has been giving speeches at union rallies and other events around the country. [3]
In late October 2011, a movement to draft him to run against Walker for Governor of Wisconsin led by Sheboygan Political activist Asher Heimermann surfaced on the Internet and Mitchell said he would consider running against Governor Walker in a potential recall election.[4][5]
