Venn diagram of the Konkani language family

Maharashtrian Konkani refers to a group of dialects spoken in the Konkan region. It is often mistakenly extended to cover Goan Konkani which is an independent language since the speakers of both Goan Konkani and Maharashtrian Konkani refer to their language as Konkani. George Abraham Grierson has referred to this dialect as the Konkan Standard of Marathi in order to differentiate it from the Konkani language.[1] The dialects which make up Maharashtrian Konkani are Parabhi, Koli, Kiristanv, Kunbi, Agari, Dhangari, Thakri, Karadhi, Sangameshwari, Bankoti and Maoli. These dialects form a gradual continuum between standard Marathi and Goan Konkani. These dialects are together considered by the ISO to be a separate language and is assigned the ISO 639-3 code knn as part of a Konkani "macrolanguage", gom.[2] Maharashtrian Konkani is considered by some linguists as a dialect of Marathi.
