History

Company stand in Hillsboro, Oregon

Dutch Bros. was founded on February 12, 1992, by brothers Travis and Dane Boersma, former dairy farmers from Grants Pass. Their first coffee stand was a temporary structure(push cart) in downtown Grants Pass. Over the next few years, permanent kiosks opened in other parts of the city, including a coffeehouse a few blocks from the original stand.

In 2009 the company claims to have served 23 million cups of coffee, with gross sales of $46 million. Dutch Bros. is believed to be the largest privately-held drive-thru coffee company in the U.S.[by whom?] The drive-thru and walk up structures are approximately 400 square feet (37 m2) on a half acre site. Some can also be found in shopping center parking lots.

In addition to fundraiser days for non-profit organizations such as the Muscular Dystrophy Association and the American Cancer Society, the company reinvests one percent of annual gross sales back into the community, donating nearly $1,000,000 in 2009 to nonprofit organizations.

As of August 2011, there are 162 locations in seven states: Oregon, Washington, California, Nevada, Idaho, Arizona and Colorado.
