Biography

Garrett was born in Jupiter, Florida to Randy Nelson and Karole Cooney, a former Kravis Center front-of-house manager, and daughter of Niles Cooney, the owner of an orange grove in Fort Pierce, Florida. He attended Dreyfoos School of the Arts and played varsity soccer. He later moved to Los Angeles with his mother in 2005, graduated from the Los Angeles County High School for the Arts with the Theater Class of 2007.[2] He also has an older brother named Brett who is a professional Speed-boarder.[3]

Career

In 2002, Garrett made his first acting appearance as Andy, a Bak student in a Kravis Center etiquitte video.

He also had guest appearances on True Jackson VP and Criminal Minds in 2008.[4] From 2008 to 2009, he appeared as Colin in the Ironsink produced webseries Upstairs Girls. [5] He also made two cameos as the Colin character in another webseries Cougars, also produced by Ironsink, a collective of webshows with a shared continuity/universe.

In April 2009, he was cast as a SORASed (rapidly aged) Michael Corinthos III on General Hospital, portraying the role of Michael Corinthos III (the son of mobster and well-known character Sonny Corinthos), after emerging from a year-long coma.[6] Garrett received positive reviews from General Hospital fans after succeeding Dylan Cash, who portrayed the role for six years (2002–2008).

In 2010, ABC released the following statement stating that they would be letting actor Drew Garrett go and would be recasting the role of Michael Corinthos III : "We want to thank Drew Garrett for his time with General Hospital and wish him well in all his future endeavors,".[7] Many of his castmates were shocked and reacted negatively. Fans have reacted negatively about this news as well and have posted an online petition to keep him on General Hospital.[8]

On April 2, 2010, Garrett spoke to WPBF reporter Cathleen O’Toole in an interview about his dismissal from General Hospital. Garrett stated, “Whether I stayed on the show one year or four years or two years, it was a great experience regardless and a great tool for my career.” Garrett was inspired by his fans efforts to keep him on the series and made the following statement, “I'm trying to stay 100 percent confident, because you got to in this kind of business. But it's hard not to when you have so many people providing you so much support”.[9]

Garrett portrayed the role for 11 months, earning an Emmy "pre-nomination" in the Outstanding Younger Actor category in March 2010.[10] On May 12, 2010, Garrett earned his first Emmy nomination for his portrayal of Michael Corinthos III on General Hospital.

In July 2010, rumors began circulating that Garrett would appear on The Young & The Restless as a recast Noah Newman. These rumors began after the character's most recent portrayer Kevin Schmidt left the role in February and later revealed that he would not be returning. These rumors were later revealed to be false.

Personal life

In his spare time, he enjoys surfing, skateboarding, long-boarding, soccer, swimming and tennis.[11]
