Dr. Munshi Singh.

Dr. Munshi Singh, completed M. Sc. (Botany) from Agra University, Agra (UP). In 1975 with specialization in Genetics and Plant Breeding and Ph. D in 1969 from IARI, New Delhi under the guidance of dr. A. B. Joshi.

Joined IARI in 1960 after serving Agriculture Department of UP for 3 years on Tobacco Research and Teaching in Government Agricultural College, at Kanpur, UP.

Dr. Munshi Singh’s major Achievements

1. Developed medium staple cotton (24–25 mm) with high fibre strength (10-11 PSI) upland cotton varieties spinning up to 60s count. 2. Developed several Photo thermal insensitive Egyptian cotton strains suitable for growing in North Indian Conditions were developed for the first time. 3. Worked on Genetic of Bollworm resistance in G. Arboreum and published the results for the first time. 4. Developed different plant types in Upland cottons and physiological basis of productivity was worked with the help of these plant types. 5. Guided number of students for Ph. D. in Genetics and Plant Breeding at IARI, New Delhi. 6. Visited Vietnam, as FAO expert on Cotton crop. 7. Dr. Munshi Singh passed number of high strength cottons lines to his predecessors in IARI New Delhi, on which systematic studies are going on in introducing high strength character to Cotton genotypes. 8. During 2007, he was awarded The 'Honorary Fellowship', by "The Indian Society for Cotton Improvement", (ISCI, Mumbai), for the appreciation of his valuable contribution for improving production and quality of High strength cottons in India.
