Dr.Muhmmad Ali Shaikh , born in Larkana-Sindh[when?] is Principal of the historic institution, Sindh Madressatul Islam (SMI) College, which has attained the status of a public-sector university, under the decision of the federal cabinet. He has been nominated as the first vice chancellor of the SMI University by the President of Pakistan. The Presidential Directive, duly endorsed by the Prime Minister of Pakistan stated: “Dr. Muhammad Ali Shaikh, Principal of Sindh Madressatul Islam (SMI) College since 1994 and an eminent scholar would be elevated to the position of Vice-chancellor of Sindh Madressatul Islam (SMI)University on account of his service rendered ”.

Education
Shaikh received a masters degree in economics from Karachi University in 1988, and holds his PhD in Mass Communication also from University of Karachi . He was a Fulbright Scholar/ Faculty-Fellow at American University, Washington, DC, where he conducted his post-doctoral research on citizens' right to information. He has also attended Fulbright Institute at College of Journalism and Communication of University of Florida, Gainesville. He has also attended a course on Financial Management at National Institute of Public Administration (NIPA) Karachi as well as obtained training for teaching and research at university level at the National Academy on Higher Education, University Grants Commission (UGC) Islamabad, presently known as Higher Education Commission (HEC).
Academic career
He been Assistant Professor and Deputy Provost at Mehran University of Engineering and Technology Jamshoro., and taught the subject of „Print Media .at Institute of Business Management,Karachi. He also edited Science magazine and served as an anchorperson on current affair shows of Pakistan television during 1990-94.
Government career
He has been served in four different departments of Sindh Government such as; Director of Colleges, Director Ombudsman, Director Coastal & Other departments of the state. He has served as Director, SZABIST Center for Information & Research, Karachi, Director-General, Sindh Ombudsman's Secretariat, Director-General, Sindh Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Director-General, Sindh Coastal Development Authority and Director-General (Colleges) Sindh. as well as Executive District Officer (Higher Education) in Karachi City District Government. He was Chairman, Sindh Textbook Board, Jamshoro and Administrator,Sheikh Sultan Trust, Karachi. Additionally he is the chairperson of FOIA Pakistan.[1]
Publications
Shaikh has written several books on subjects relating to education and communication as well as writing biographies of leading personalities of South Asian origin. He also haas written writing articles on issues relating to his areas of interest in Daily Dawn and other publications.
- Satellite Television & Social Change in Pakistan:A Case Study of Rural Sindh. The book discusses the role of satellite television in bringing social change in Pakistan through a case study of rural Sindh.
- Benazir Bhutto: A Political Biography.Published by Orient Books Publishing House as an international edition in 2000, the book traces back the origin as well as past of Bhutto family, Ms. Benazir Bhutto's childhood at Karachi and Rawalpindi, her education abroad andher political apprenticeship under charge of her father ZA Bhutto. The book covers her circumstances that brought her to power in 1988 as the first ever popularly elected woman Prime Minister in any Muslim country, and traces the events that marked her two stints in power elaborating the causes of her removal from the power the two times. The book has been translated in many languages.[2]
