Down Among the Dead is the fourth episode of Season One of the BBC technological thriller, Bugs. The original airdate was 22 April 1995.

Synopsis

Ed, Roz and Beckett are hired by a large city bank to investigate former employee Bryan Brody, who became interested in stolen ship components. Disguised as naval engineers, Beckett and Ed convince Brody to let them in on his plans, meanwhile Roz tracks Bryan's wife, Juliet, who is leaving a string of dead bodies in her wake. Roz soon uncovers a link between the bank and a diamond merchant.[1]

Ed and Beckett are brought onto an old Russian submarine to fix a broken pump system, where they learn Bryan plans to rob the bank by tapping into the underwater phone cable and intercept the transmission between the city bank and another bank. He would then divert the funds to another bank account while leaving a Phantom transaction on the receiving bank account to cover his tracks temporally. While this would not go undetected for long, Juliet would then be purchasing a large amount of diamonds from the diamond merchant using the stolen funds before the banks are aware of the phantom transaction and have time to correct the problem.

Ed and Beckett's covers are blown when Bryan intercepts Ed making a radio call to Roz which she never receives. Bryan attempts to kill Ed but fails and after evading capture for a short while Beckett is captured and handcuffed in the pump room. Bryan successfully executes his plan, unbeknown to him that Roz has discovered the funds are being tampered with due to timing errors on the transaction logs. Roz alerts the diamond merchant to the robbery taking place. This blows Juliet’s cover who kills the guards with their own guns and attempts to escape taking Roz as a hostage.

Bryan then leaves Beckett and the crew for dead in the submarine which is now low of fuel and uses the only escape boat and returns to the city to meet back up with Juliet. As Juliet's cover is blown the barriers to the car park are closed preventing her from getting in the getaway car driven by Bryan which is on the other side of the barrier. Bryan gets the diamonds from Juliet and tries to leave, however after realising he will leave her to take the fall for the crime she kills him. Police arrest her soon after.

Meanwhile, Ed meets up with the Dutch Navy and use sonar to search for the submarine. They eventually find it near a wrecked Russian cargo tanker and rescue Beckett and the rest of the crew from drowning just in time.
