Double Ditch

Double Ditch

Double Ditch is an archaeological site located north of Bismarck, North Dakota. Double Ditch was a village inhabited by Mandan Indians for about 300 years from (AD 1490-1785). Mandan Indians were a Native American tribe that lived along the banks of the Missouri River in modern day North and South Dakota. Double Ditch was one of seven villages located near the mouth of the Heart River. These villages were centers of trade between the Mandans, their nomadic neighbors, and the Euroamericans traders. Double Ditch and other villages along the mouth of the Heart River were abandoned when the smallpox epidemic swept through the interior of North America around 1781-1782. The Mandans relocated to villages further up the Heart River. Today, the remains of earth lodges, midden mounds, and fortification ditches are visible at the site. Double Ditch is currently a historic site managed by the State Historical Society of North Dakota.
