Pierre de Bellot dit Dostie is the ancestor of all Dostie in America and beyond, regardless of whether the name has been written D’Ostie, D’Hostie or Dosty. In the United States of America during nineteen century, some Dostie’s families have changed their name to Dusty or Dustin. Illegitimate son of Marc Bellot, Sieur de Monplaisir and Toinette Casse, maid of the house, Pierre (born 1730) has been recognized by his father.
A fatal accident caused by a stone throw, forced the boy to flee from home to avoid the hassle. He probably followed the advice of his father, a lawyer. He would then pass through the Italian port of Ostia at the mouth of the Tiber on the Mediterranean Sea where the family was doing business. Dostie surname derives its origin there. Pierre then crossed the Atlantic aboard a Spanish ship to finally settle on the Ile d’Orléans near Quebec city and married Marie-Rose Ratté, on November 18, 1754 in the Church of Saint-Pierre.
His Spanish journey explain the enigmatic Mexican peso, one of the first coins used in America, which is transmitted from one generation to another since Pierre had bequeathed it to his grand-son Antoine in 1807. Pierre died on January 13, 1808. He was buried in St-Joseph de Beauce. Pierre had four sons (Pierre, Michel, Charles-Amable and Antoine-Moïse) who were all master bakers in Quebec and two girls (Sarah and Euphrosine). One last son, André, was born into a second marriage with Marie-Anne Pepin dit Lachance.
Pauline Dostie, a descendant of the lineage of Pierre, has traced the history of the ancestor in a book entitled “Les mémoires et traces d’un couple : Marie-Rose Ratté et Pierre de Bellot dit Dostie”. She found birth certificates, marriage contracts and other deeds that reflect their lives in America. The Dostie are among the founding families of Quebec province since his ancestor arrived in Canada before the English conquest of 1759.
L'Association des familles Dostie has hit a souvenir medallion that says, using symbols, history of Pierre de Bellot dit Dostie. The reverse side of the medallion is burned of the Mexican peso dated 1732. Space has been reserved to burn the genealogy of his lineage.
