Affiliations Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Lahore The Don Bosco Technical Institute for Boys in Lahore, Pakistan, is a trade school. In 2007, there were five Muslim students at the center alongside 115 Christian youths. They range in age from 15 to 22.
The center, run by the Salesians of Don Bosco, opened in 2000 with 10 Catholic boarding students. Since then it has graduated 120 young men.
Spread over an area the equivalent of three football fields, the center offers technical skills to youths, most of whom dropped out of school. Salesian Father Miguel Angel Ruiz, the center's principal has been in charge since 2002.
The center has expanded from one to four technical trades: automotive, electrical, metalwork, and air conditioning and refrigeration. Students in its two-year program learn skills in each of these trades.
The Institute produces skilled manpower to respond to Pakistan's annual need for 1 million skilled workers in local industries. It registered with the Technical Education and Vocational Training Authority (TEVTA) in 2005. TEVTA is the nation's biggest network of polytechnic and vocational-training institutions.[1]
In 2007, the Institute passed government school inspection for approval as a technical institute. The government inspectors' report approved renewal of registration in the Register of Technical Education in the state of Punjab. The Salesian community welcomed the results which rewarded years of effort to obtain official recognition from the Government.
The project includes the opening of four new workshops equipped with machines from Germany and Italy. Teachers will take refresher courses and the structures will be adapted for basic education. On 9 June 2007, 54 boys from poor families received a technician’s diploma. The Salesian Institute represents a seed of hope for young people living in an area unsettled by episodes of violence.[2]
Additionally, a Master Plan to offer Basic Education to all drop-outs who arrive at Don Bosco was approved. Over the next three years an ambitious plan to build four large workshops will begin. The workshops will have the latest educational equipment imported from Germany and Italy and the staff will be trained in its use. The existing shops will also be upgraded. [3]
St. Mary’s Church, Gulberg held its fourth annual fund-raising event in 2006. The program has helped three young parishioners get nursing training at hospitals and four others who went to study at the Don Bosco institute.[4]
