Don’t Give up the Ship: The Tale of a Boy and a Boat is a 2008 short film, directed by American filmmaker Matthew Kinne.
The twenty-eight minute short, tell the story of Joshua, a twelve year old boatmaker who creates a model tall ship called the H.M.S. Imagination, loses it down a river, and works to total exhaustion towards the goal of buying back his beloved creation. The movie was shot in Northwest lower Michigan including cities Harbor Springs, Leland, Michigan and Traverse City.
The movie had it’s World Premiere in Traverse City at the City Opera House on July 14, 2008 and its European premiere at the Sabaoth International Film Festival in Milan, Italy on November 14th, 2008.

Production
Based on classic Biblical themes of creation, loss and redemption, the film was inspired by Albert Lamorisse’s The Red Balloon and Bobby Garabedian’s Most. Capitalizing on Northwest Michigan’s picturesque small towns, lakes and rivers, Kinne took advantage of the area and actually shot in three municipalities, Harbor Springs, Leland and Kinne’s home town, Traverse City. Most of the actor’s hailed from Traverse City’s Old Towne Playhouse.
