Djawhar ben Abd Allah (911–992), a Croat from Dalmatia, was a general and statesman in Moors army.[1][2][3] Djawhar ben Abd Allah is also known as Džauhar ben Abdallah Al-Saqlabi (Saqlabi = name for Slavs), and Djarshar, Djauhar, Djawhar, Gehoar, Jauhar, al- Saqlabi, al-Rumi, al-Siqilli, ibn-Anton (son of Antunov).[4]
Djawhar ben Abd Allah was from Cavtat, probably captured during reign of King Tomislav, around Sicily.[4] When the Arabs began to attack the Croatian coast in the 9th century, they taken him as a slave to the court of caliph Al-Khaim in Tunisia. Later he made a great career becoming the supreme general and statesman in Moors army. He conquered the land of pharaohs, thus extending the Moors Empire from the shores of the Atlantic to the river Nile. He led the conquest of North Africa and founded the new Egyptian capital Al-Qahira (Cairo), the future second largest Islamic city after Baghdad. In 970 he built up the mosque, which was named Al-Azhar (the Brightest).[1][2]
