Professional
The Phoenix Business Journal recognized him as one of 12 Green Pioneers[5] in 2010. From February 2007 through July 2008, Derrick worked for Earth 911 as Vice President of Energy Reclamation Initiatives, advocating environmental stewardship through improved communication.[6] His focus was on sustainability program development for a number of clients, including Staples and Imoeba.[7]
Derrick also developed labeling initiatives that encouraged recycling for organizations like ExxonMobil, BP/Castrol and Ashland Oil.[8]
Starting in September 2008, Derrick began working as a venture partner with NotePadGroup [9] in Scottsdale, Arizona. While at NotePadGroup, Derrick facilitated investments with local green start-up companies.
In November 2008, while with NotePad, Derrick was recruited as Chief Operating Officer (COO) of Buildproof,[10] one of the NotePadGroup's investments. At Buildproof, Derrick executed a strategic partnership with ServiceMagic, assembled the Buildproof team and infrastructure while helping to bring the product to market.
Throughout 2009, Derrick worked with UsedPrice.com on their Green UP [11] program, providing expert oversight and strategy to create an e-waste reduction initiative focused on educating consumers and business decision makers to keep obsolete and outdated electronics items out of landfills through reuse or recycling. The initiative created content and widgets [12] that calculate the value of electronics items to determine if asset recovery or recycling is the best solution. The program lists manufacturer and retailer take back programs [13] as well as giving ideas and suggestions on ways to reduce waste and improve energy efficiency.
Derrick resigned his position at Buildproof in September 2009 to take the reins of his new venture, GreenNurture.
In addition, Derrick is a writer and guest expert for such publications as Triple Pundit,[14] Environmental Leader,[15] Green Economy Post[16] and AZ Big Media: Green Scene.[17] Derrick speaks publicly on corporate sustainability at such events as the Wal-Mart-sponsored NWA Green Expo.[18]
Derrick is also the host of Your Triple Bottom Line,[19] a weekly, one-hour radio program he co-hosts with Angelo Fernando.
GreenNurture
GreenNurture is a private company based in Tempe, Arizona. Officially launched at the DEMO Conference in March 2010, GreenNurture.com is an easy-to-deploy sustainability program that internalizes a company's efforts to go green.[20] Derrick Mains is the mind behind this business concept for GreenNurture.com. As CEO, Derrick's main role is to align the company with his strategic vision, both internally and externally throughout the GreenNurture organization.
Personal
In 1998, Derrick spent a few semesters in ministerial school at Greater Works School of Ministry where he took an interest in the bio-diversity of species while writing a research paper on the life of Monarch butterflies. It was his research, about the loss of habitat and diminishing populations of the Monarch, that inspired him to begin living a more conscious life understanding the impact humans have on other species.
Derrick is married to fellow Pennsylvania native Tracyann Mains, and they currently reside in the Phoenix metro area.
Music
Derrick has been involved with local music scenes since his early 20's and currently focuses most of his performing on Blues and Soul. His most recent endeavor, Derrick and The Redemptors,[21] is currently on hiatus.
However, Derrick recently was able to display his musical talents at 2010 Spring DEMO Conference. His recreation of the famous Wilson Pickett hit "Mustang Sally" crowned him the winner of the Spring 2010 DEMO Idol contest.[22]
