There are currently twelve operating fire districts within Delaware County, Pennsylvania. Within these districts, there are seventy-one individual fire departments in current operation. On average, a fire department in Delaware County can expect to respond to at least 300 emergency calls per year. Many of these departments also run both ALS (Advanced Life Support) and BLS (Basic Life Support) ambulances often being staffed by volunteers alone. Some of these ambulance companies will run upwards of 2,000 ambulance calls per year.
All of these departments are fully volunteer with the exception of Upper Darby Fire Department and Chester City Fire Department.
Within the Delaware County fire service, there are currently over 2,000 active volunteer firefighters serving the county every day.

History
The fire service in Delaware County, Pennsylvania dates back to the time when organized fire departments first came into existence. The Delaware County fire service first came into being in the 18th century. Since that time, it has thrived into one of the United States' most renowned and progressive firefighting counties. Fire departments in Delaware County are some of the nation's leaders in training and certifications. Very few counties have firefighters with the same high average of certifications per firefighter in the nation.
Delaware County also has its own state and nationally recognized fire academy located in Darby Township, Delaware County which was opened in 1992.
