Description
Debactoral is a chemical cauterizer. It is composed mostly of 50% sulfuric acid (H2SO4), 4% phenol-sulfonic acid, and a 24% sulphonated phenolics compound which is made from beechwood creosote. Debacterol usually comes in a swab form, but is also available in a vial. Its formulation is documented more deeply in U.S. Patent 6,596,299 and U.S. Patent 6,830,757.
How it works
For the ulcerating mucosal lesion to heal, the factors causing the injury must first be controlled at the ulcer site. Then, any necrotic tissue debris in the ulcer bed must be removed so that healthy new cells are able to migrate into the damaged area and proliferate. In the normal course of healing the immune system is relied upon to perform and promote all of these activities. A limiting factor in the rate of ulcer healing is the capacity of the immune system of an individual to prevent further damage and to clear the way for repair cells to infiltrate and multiply.
Debacterol works by cauterizing the exposed sensory nerves in the open sore area. This method deadens the nerves, and also allows the area to scab over. While not a complete cure, Debacterol takes away the major pain associated with the ulceration allowing the patient to eat, speak and continue day to day normal activities that would otherwise have been impaired if the discomfort was still present.
One cleans the ulcer, dip a cue-tip into the acid solution and rub the ulcer including the ridge surrounding it for no more than 6 or 7 seconds then rinse thoroughly with water or solution of baking soda and water. As can be imagined this a quite painful 6 or 7 seconds, however afterward the pain is immediately and permanently relieved.
An advantage of Debacterol over silver nitrate is that it is less aggressive at cauterizing tissue than the latter.[1]
Availability
Debacterol is a prescription product for the USA. Outside of the USA in Canada and Europe is sold OTC under the brand name ORALMEDIC. Both are made by Epien Medical. Debacterol is an expensive solution for canker sores, since each swab costs $5-$10 dollars, and it is a prescription only product. Also it is not indicated for personal application, only professional application by medical staff, but often it is easily used off label by people outside a medical setting, if they can get the swabs to take home. Some doctors can charge $25-$45 for this quick procedure in their office. Some sources say Debacterol is available in vial form, which would make it cheaper, but it is extremely difficult to find a pharmacy or distributor for the vial form, Debacterol in swab form is not stocked by pharmacies usually, but most can special order it, if they acknowledge it exists to the consumer.
The National Drug Codes for Debacterol are:
