- Pole (surname)
-
This surname, Pole or de la Pole, has many origins. The one of Sir William de la Pole of Hull is obscure. His father's name is not certainly known but may have been William. His mother Elena remarried John Rotenheryng. Some genealogical tables [1] indicate Sir William was related to the old ruling house of Powys Wenwynwyn. However, there is no concrete evidence whatever of this alleged relationship, though those princes' descendants used the surname de la Pole (i.e. "of the Pool", referring to their case to Welshpool) It was during this exile that Gruffydd ap Gwenwynwyn probably adopted the surname de la Pole referring to the old name for Welshpool which had become his family's capital.[1] This surname was no doubt not exceptional.
