David F. Alfonso

David Alfonso is a self-made millionaire and American entrepreneur, investor and businessman whose holdings include the private investment business Empire Investment Holdings, where he is the founder, chairman and chief executive officer.

Through his holding company, Alfonso owns a portfolio of highly diversified operating companies,[1] all purchased from Fortune 1000 corporations. Targeting the business profiles of technology, business services, distribution and niche manufacturing,[2] Alfonso makes calculated investments and leverages a capital base that includes his personal capital, the assets of Empire Investment Holdings, as well as private equity funds backed by pledged capital commitments from private and institutional investors.

Alfonso lives in South Florida with his wife and two children.[3] He is the son of Cuban immigrants and was born and raised in West Hartford, Connecticut.

Business

For the past twenty years, Alfonso's career has been focused on mergers, acquisitions and operations, with a keen focus on the technology, business services, niche manufacturing and distribution sectors. Through that time he has successfully completed more than 40 transactions from Global2000 corporations, employing his specialized approach of addressing the complexities of acquiring non-core corporate divestitures, as well as ensuring post close business continuity. As an investor and portfolio manager, Alfonso has been responsible for a diversified group of thirty companies, generating aggregate revenues over $5 billion annually, and employing 15,000 people throughout the world.[4] Alfonso's experience includes significant international exposure to dealings in Europe, Latin America and Asia.

Alfonso serves as chairman and chief executive officer of Empire Investment Holdings, where he oversees the firm's direction and strategic development, including that of its portfolio companies.[5]

Prior to establishing Empire Investment Holdings in 2003, Alfonso held executive positions with Platinum Equity,[6] Hartford Life International and American Bankers Insurance Group.

Education

Alfonso's education includes Florida International University and the University of Miami, where he earned a bachelor's degree and an M.B.A., respectively.[7] In 2011, Alfonso was awarded FIU's College of Business Administration (Landon Undergraduate School of Business) Medallion – Outstanding Alumnus.[8]

Philanthropy

Alfonso is active in the support of organizations like the FIU Athletic Department, United Way, the Jimmie Johnson Foundation, Veterans of World War II, the WWII Foundation, Vizcaya Museum and Gardens, and the Zoological Society of Florida. He is a member of the board of directors of the Florida International University Foundation Board and serves on the Board’s Finance and Audit Committee.[9] In 2009, Florida International University recognized Alfonso as the first ever double Living Scholar Donor, which provides scholarships to four FIU student athletes (2 men and 2 women).[10]

Additionally in 2011, FIU’s Athletic Department and FIU alumnus Alfonso announced a five-year deal for the exclusive naming rights for the Panther football team’s home field now called “Alfonso Field at FIU Stadium."[11]
