Career
Kelly started his career at Kix 96 FM in Coventry in 1997 presenting the evening show. He left Kix 96 FM in 2000 and freelaned as a radio presenter. He the joined the Newcastle upon Tyne, England based Galaxy 105-106 where he presented the weekdday evening show and a networked Saturday dance show.
After two years, the then owners of Galaxy (Chrysalis Group) decided to network his radio shows, resulting in him moving to the network centre, Galaxy 105 in Leeds, England.[1]
He also presented a Saturday dance show on the Global Radio owned 95.8 Capital FM alongside his Galaxy shows and eventually in June 2009, he left Galaxy to work at Capital FM full time, presenting the 2200–0200 slot.[2]
On January 3 2011 the Galaxy and Hit Music networks merged to form the Capital FM network. As a result, his late night show could therefore be heard across the UK on the new network with a slight change of show time, as he was moved to Sunday to Thursday from 2300–0300. From January 3rd, he was once again broadcasting on his old Galaxy stations, under the new Capital name.
On 11 April 2011, Radio City 96.7 announced that Dave Kelly would become drivetime presenter from mid June 2011,[3] he presented his final Capital FM broadcast on 29 April 2011.
He currently presents weekday drivetime from 1500–1900 on Radio City 96.7 from 13 June.[4] He also presents a Saturday evening "in the mix" slot from 1800–2200 on Key 103 from 18 June 2011.[5]
95.8 Capital FM Antics
His show included a variety of hits along with audience participation in the form of games, comedy based debates and opinion polls. Kelly had invented games on air like "Neil or No Neil", "Singing into a Plastic Cup" and "Scissors, Paper, Stone: On the Phone" which he refers to as "S.P.S.O.T.P". This game has been moved to his current drivetime slot. Kelly refers to his games and radio antics as "Radio Gold" and tests his listeners and game contestants before each game to check if they know the game is Radio Gold. He also asks the listener to rate the game from one to ten - if they say a number above 11 they get a "ding" signifying his approval. His games all had jingles.
Neil or No Neil
Neil or No Neil is a game described as radio gold. It is the brain child of Dave Kelly and involves a fun jingle and a phone. Kelly calls a number from the American phone book which has the first initial "N". If the person answering is called Neil or knows a Neil they could put Dave through to, the contestant has won the game. If the caller hangs up, Kelly will often call back. In the past, Kelly has attempted to replace Neil or No Neil with Meal or No Meal which involved calling an anonymous American and inquiring whether the caller had eaten dinner. It was coined as Radio Tin. The jingle to this game was a thick American accent welcoming listeners to the show followed by a few celebratory "woops". Neil or No Neil Airs every weekday afternoon after 5pm on Radio City 96.7
Scissors, Paper, Stone: On the Phone!
Scissors, Paper, Stone: On the Phone! is a radio gold categorised game. It involved Kelly and different listeners battling it out to win a best out of three game of rock, paper, scissors. Kelly rarely wins the matches and does not take it in good heart, if he wins he is sure to maximise his victory with an edited version of Queen's We are the Champions and force the listener to hear it and admit that Kelly had won. He has been quoted as saying that it is called Scissors, Paper, Stone: On the Phone instead of the usual Rock, Paper, Scissors': On the Phone, because "It needs to rhyme!" If Dave wins Kelly expects you to give him a present. It's on Radio City 96.7
Chicken and egg fried rice, Price is right.
Chicken and egg fried rice, Price is right" is another radio gold categorised game. Kelly will ring up a Chinese takeaway in a certain city. Once through on the phone he will ask for the price of Chicken and egg fried rice. Then after this Kelly will ask a listener who has called in, whether or not they think Chicken and egg fried rice at the next Chinese takeaway take away will be higher or lower. Kelly will then ring up the next takeaway to find out the price. If the listener has guessed correctly whether or not they think the Chicken and egg fried rice at will be higher or lower, then they win. This game is played in a similar format to The price is right, which is where it gets its name from. Airs every weekday afternoon after 6pm on Radio City 96.7
