Yugoslav Railways ( _hr. Jugoslavenske željeznice, _sr. "Југословенске железнице" (in latinic: "Jugoslovenske železnice"), _sl. Jugoslovanske železnice, _mk. Jugoslovenski železnici), with standard acronym "JŽ", was a railway company created in Belgrade, in the 1920s as a successor to Serbian State Railways.Fact|date=October 2008

The company was founded as the National Railways of the Kingdom of the Serbs, Croats and Slovenes. In 1929, it was renamed along with the country to Yugoslav State Railways (JDŽ). In 1941 the railway ceased to exist and two new railway companies were created: Croatian State Railways (HDŽ) and Serbian State Railways (SDŽ). The railway was reestablished after World War II. In 1952 it was renamed to Yugoslav Railways.

Rolling stock

In its beginnings, the JŽ was using mostly Hungarian-made steam locomotives. With the beginning of the electric era, they acquired Italian-made locomotives, which was followed by Swedish and local-made.

Most of the diesel locomotives were made by General Motors.
