In the 1950s Freehold High School was the only high school in the area and drew its students from all over Western Monmouth County.... One of the teams that brought Freehold into the limelight was the legendary 1953 team that went undefeated (9-0) and won Shore Conference and Central Jersey championships. Its marquee name was running back Danny Lewis, who went from Freehold to the University of Wisconsin and then to a National Football League career."
