He is a half-back.[2] He made his NRL debut in the 2011 season, playing in all of Manly's 27 matches, winning the NRL premiership, and being named the NRL's Dally M Rookie of the Year and the Rugby League International Federation's world half-back of the year.

National Youth Competition

Cherry-Evans played 46 games for the National Youth Competition team of Manly-Warringah Sea Eagles over the 2008 and 2009 season where he scored 246 points in total including 24 tries.[3] He was named on the interchange bench of the 2009 Toyota Cup season's team of the year.

Queensland Cup

Before the 2010 NRL season, Cherry-Evans was in competition with fellow rookie Trent Hodkinson to be Manly's first choice halfback following the departure of 2008 premiership halfback and club captain Matt Orford to the Bradford Bulls in England. Manly coach Des Hasler chose Hodkinson which meant that Cherry-Evans played in the Queensland Cup for Manly's then feeder club the Sunshine Coast Sea Eagles. After captaining the team for most of the season, Cherry-Evans was named the Queensland Cup Player of the Year, and Rookie of the Year. His performances in the side saw him selected to the Queensland Residents team where he was also named team captain.

NRL career

Following Hodkinson's signing with the Canterbury Bulldogs for 2011, Cherry Evans made his debut for Manly in round 1 of the 2011 NRL season against the Melbourne Storm. He has since cemented his spot in the Sea Eagles top grade and as of September 4, 2011 he has played in all 24 games and has played every minute of the 2011 home and away season. The rookie halfback has kicked 24 goals and 3 field goals along with six tries in helping Manly to a 18-6 record and current 2nd on the NRL ladder.

He scored two tries in Manly's 34 - 10 comeback victory over the Brisbane Broncos, one of which was set up by a flick pass from Brett Stewart. The first of these tries was also his first ever NRL try.

In round 13 against the Bulldogs, Cherry-Evans crossed the try line untouched from a scrum, performed a one-on-one strip on Dean Halatau and had 3 try assists in a dominating display that saw him named as halfback in the BigPond Sport Team of the Week.

Cherry-Evans won the 2011 Dally M Rookie of the Year award and scored a try in Manly's victory over the New Zealand Warriors in the 2011 NRL grand final.

Representative career

Born and raised in Queensland, Daly Cherry-Evans is eligible for the Queensland Maroons should he be selected for State of Origin.[4]

English coach Steve McNamara offered Cherry-Evans a starting spot on the England team for the 2011 Four Nations as he is eligible for England through his English born mother. Cherry-Evans declined the offer preferring to play representative football for both Queensland and Australia should be selected.[5]

On 3 October 2011, the day after winning the NRL premiership with Manly, Cherry-Evans was selected in Australia's squad for the 2011 Four Nations tournament in England and Wales.[6] While on tour, he was named by the Rugby League International Federation in its annual awards as the world's best half-back for 2011.[7]
