They were modified by Australian National (AN) railways originally for shunting operations. They are mostly ex-South Australian Railways 830 class locomotives rebuilt by AN and Australian Southern Railroad (ASR)/ Australian Railroad Group (ARG) for driver-only duties, with one ex-New South Wales 48 class locomotive rebuilt to 900 class.
History
DA3 was damaged beyond repair in a level crossing accident and was eventually scrapped. The locomotive's nose was used in another conversion - 874 for Australian Western Rail - where they were classed as T class: T01 and T02.
