Elections for Coventry City Council will next be held on Thursday, 3 May 2012. This is the same day as other United Kingdom local elections, 2012. As the council is elected by thirds, one seat in each of the wards will be up for election.
Plans to have a referendum on an elected mayor for Coventry alongside the 2012 local elections[1] have been delayed until 2013.[2]
The result will have the following consequences for the total number of seats on the Council after the elections:Party Previous council Staying councillors Seats up for election Election result New council Labour 35 28 7 Conservatives 17 8 9 Socialist Alternative 1 0 1 Liberal Democrats 1 0 1 British National Party 0 0 0 Independent 0 0 0 Green 0 0 0 UKIP 0 0 0 Total 54 36 18 18 54 Confirmed Candidates
The Labour Party have selected Maya Ali, a former Conservative, to stand in Westwood Ward against sitting Conservative councillor Marcus Lapsa.[3]
