The street continues under New Jersey Turnpike Newark Bay Extension, having been re-named in the 1970s. The cobblestoned portion of Johnston Avenue in Liberty State Park to the Communipaw Terminal on the Upper New York Bay was is named Audrey Zapp Drive[2] to honor the local environmentalist influential in the development of the park.[3]
The name Johnston is connected to the era when the area was dominated by rail infrastructure and is taken from John Taylor Johnston, president of the Central Railroad of New Jersey from 1848 to 1877. The Port Johnston Coal Docks on Constable Hook in Bayonne, New Jersey in 1864 also bears his name. The former Johnston Avenue Yard was the terminus for the Lehigh Valley Terminal Railway.
