History
Cottonwood Valley Charter School was founded in 2001 by a group of parents (who later formed the first Governing Council) who wanted a school that would be safe, drug-free, and have a healthy education environment. Parent involvement is a key component of the school's operation.
Campus
Cottonwood Valley Charter School (or CVCS) occupies 3.1 acres (13,000 m2) of land in central Socorro, which was previously the location of an abandoned hospital building. Current facilities consist of eight portables, most with two rooms each, and a permanent multi-purpose building on which construction was completed in the spring of 2011, the first phase of development of new facilities.[4]
Curriculum
The school primarily uses the Core Knowledge Foundation curriculum and textbooks, with content aligned to the New Mexico state education standards and benchmarks. The school met the Adequate Yearly Progress requirements of the No Child Left Behind Act every year since these tests began, until 2011, when more than 90% of all New Mexico elementary and middle schools failed to meet AYP.[5]
Extracurricular activities
Middle school students participate in Science Fair. Involvement in other events or activities such as declamation, spelling bee, band, chorus, essay and reading contests, Science Olympiad, GUTS[6], and ham radio is encouraged. CVCS middle-school students may also participate in team sports at other local middle and high schools.
