The first Cottman Transmission Center was established in 1962 and the company later expanded to hundreds of locations throughout the United States and Canada. It was named after Cottman Avenue in northeast Philadelphia. Cottman continues to operate hundreds of car repair centers throughout the United States and Canada. Terry Bradshaw was the spokesperson for the company from 2005 to 2007. In 2007, Cottman's parent holding company acquired AAMCO as part of its portfolio. Some of the operating Cottman locations elected to convert to the AAMCO brand lowering the Cottman store count to approximately 150 units.

Cottman continues to operate totally separate from AAMCO although they are owned by the same parent holding company. Howeverm they now do not sell new Cottman franchises; all new centers are under the AAMCO brand name.

As of March 2009, from their website, Cottman has 123 active centers.
