Cornélie van Oosterzee

Cornélie van Oosterzee (16 August 1863 – 12 August 1943) was a Dutch pianist and composer.

Biography

Cornelie van Oosterzee was born in Batavia, now Jakarta. She began piano lessons at the age of 16 and later studied music theory with Willem Nicolaï. Her studies ended when her family moved to the Dutch East Indies, but she resumed her studies with Nicolaï when she returned to The Netherlands at the age of 25. She studied with Samuel de Lange in Stuttgart and with Robert Radecke, and was admitted as the only woman student to Heinrich Urban's Master School of Instrumental Composers in Berlin.[1] Van Oosterzee was made a Knight of the Order of Oranje-Nassau in 1897.[2] She died in Berlin.

Works

Van Oosterzee wrote songs and an opera. She also composed music for choral ensemble, chamber ensemble and orchestra. Selected works include:

  • Das Gelöbnis (1910) opera
  • Koningsidyllen symphonic poem after Tennyson
  • Nordische Phantasy
  • Prelude to Iolanthe[3]
