List of Turn A Gundam mobile units

The mechanical design of the anime Turn A Gundam is the first and only in the series, using a non-Japanese designer. Industrial designer Syd Mead designed these mecha with the view of simple and realistic, instead of following Japanese trend of mecha like designs, he introduced more industrial design methods into the mechas. The new designs are very controversial to the fans, and the director Yoshiyuki Tomino felt that they are exotic and are not generally accepted. However, this is also what he intended and he did not think the hard work is wasted, since the show overall received good comments. The show also used mechas from older series.

MS-06 Borjarnon

As the war with the Moonrace began in CC 2345, Inglessa leader Guin Sard Lineford directed miner Sid Munzer to search the mountains for mobile suits. His search yielded the AMX-109 Kapool. However, in the nearby Luziana fiefdom, the ruling Borjarno family was doing the same and uncovered two types of mobile suits: the MS-06 Borjarnon and the MS-05 Borjarnon Gavane Goonny Custom. The Borjarnon's versatility as a ground and space unit made it the main front line mobile suit for the Earth Militia during the war with the Moonrace. The Borjarnon's armament consists mainly of three weapons: a Bazooka, a standard machine gun, and a blinding cracker. Though the Borjarnon's ammunition was no match for the armor of Moonrace suits like the JMA-0530 WaDom, it was quite effective against other suits like the MRC-U11D WaD.

Although known by a different name in the series, in reality the Borjarnon is merely an excavated variant of the MS-06 Zaku II.

MS-05 Borjarnon Gavane Goonny Custom

Gavane's custom unit is grouped together with the standard Borjarnon, there are some exterior differences. Most notably, the Gavane's Borjarnon has a different color scheme and lacks the power cables of the other Borjarnons. It also is has no right arm shield, no spikes on the left shoulder and has a piece of metal on its head over the monoeye.

Although known by a different name in the series, in reality the Borjarnon is merely an excavated variant of the MS-05 Zaku I.

AMX-109 Kapool

As the war with the Moonrace began in CC 2345, Inglessa leader Guin Sard Lineford directed miner Sid Munzer to search the mountains for mobile suits. His search yielded the AMX-109 Kapool, which would become the first mobile suit used in mass numbers by the Inglessa Militia. Though the Kapool's ammunition was no match for the armor of Moonrace suits like the JMA-0530 WaDom, it was extremely effective against other suits like the MRC-U11D WaD. Later, as the Willgem traveled across the ocean in its journey to the Moon, pilot Sochie Heim discovered that the Kapool was well-suited to underwater combat.

It appears to be an excavated variant of the AMX-109 Capule from the 1986 series Mobile Suit Gundam ZZ.

Kapool Corin Nander Custom

The custom unit piloted by psychopathic pilot Corin Nander was slightly modified for his style of combat. Aside from being painted red, a hand was placed over the Kapool's claw which allowed it to hold objects like the Minchi drill (presumably the same one left over from Corin's TAF-M9 Eagail). The hand could also be fired as a weapon, the 'rocket punch'. Corin would effectively pilot his custom Kapool at the end of the Earth/Moonrace war, sacrificing himself in a suicide attack on Gym Ghingnham's CONCEPT-X 6-1-2 Turn X.

FLAT-L06D FLAT

Designed mainly as an atmospheric re-entry unit, the FLAT-L06D FLAT serves various purposes. One such purpose was escorting Moonrace citizens Loran Cehack, Fran Doll and Keith Laijie to Earth in CC 2343 to live there for two years as an experiment. When war began between Earth and the Moonrace in CC 2345, FLATs joined the battle as well. Keith Laijie sold his FLAT to the Inglessa Militia so that he could open his Donkey Bakery. The FLAT (aka 'High Heels') was handed over to Joseph Yaht and became his personal mobile suit for the rest of the war. The main armament of the FLAT consisted of two unique weapons: the collapsible box beam rifle and box missile launcher. Another attack included the Hyper Vibration, which could deflect virtually all enemy fire and destroy nearby objects. Other FLATs also appeared during the war, piloted by the Red Team's Cancer Kafka and Muron Muron, who were descendants of Moonrace citizens who settled on Earth. Also of note was an odd modification introduced late in the war- retrofitting the Core Fighter from Loran Cehack's SYSTEM ∀-99 (WD-M01) Turn A Gundam onto the FLAT to serve as its cockpit.

MR-Spi05 Rib

The MR-Spi05 Rib was a worker mobile suit used by the Moonrace. The Moonrace used these units to construct chain link fences to keep the Earthrace out of their seized territory. The Earth Militia would capture many of these units and use them in failed combat attempts against the Moonrace. Many Moonrace citizens that wanted to live peacefully on the Earth would use these units to aid the Earthrace in events like parades.

MRC-U11D Walking Dumpling "WaD"

The MRC-U11D Walking Dumpling "WaD" was built and operated by the Moonrace. The Dianna Counter forces brought a large number of these mobile suits to the Earth as part of their return. The WaD could be fitted with a variety of different weapons, including a rocket grenade launcher, Gatling machine gun, joint buster and machine gun. The WaD had a spine for added mobility, speed and the ability to peer around walls and down cliffs without putting the legs in danger. Many of these units would be captured by the Earth Militia and were repainted red and named 'Arumajiro' (Armadillo).

NRS-P701R Godwin

After the NRS-P701 Gozzo's battled Loran Cehack's SYSTEM ∀-99 (WD-M01) Turn A Gundam, they were collected by the Earth Militia and upgraded into the NRS-P701R Godwin. Like the Gozzo, the Godwin was armed with a railgun mounted on the right shoulder. It lacked the Gozzo's spiked shield and forearm missile launchers, but it was equipped with a heat hawk for close combat. Two units were assigned to former Gozzo pilots Bruno and Jacop. After a failed attempt to assassinate Queen Dianna Soriel, Bruno and Jacop would use their Godwins for the Earth Militia, where they stay until the end of the war.

Moonrace/Diana Counter

Concept-X 6-1-2 (Concept-X Project-6 Division-1 Block-2) Turn X

As the war continued to rage between the Moonrace and Earth, on the Moon the political situation was changing just as rapidly; an alliance headed by Gym Ghingnham and Agrippa Maintainer was attempting a coup against Queen Dianna Soriel. During this time, Gym became obsessed with learning about the Dark History and began several excavations on the Moon's surface to uncover evidence of that era. His excavations on the Moon yielded several mobile suits: the Turn X for his personal use, and several G-M1F (XM-0754) Bandit units for his pilot Merrybell Gadget. The prior history of the Turn X is just as much as a mystery as the Turn A's is, however Gym did state that the Turn X is the "brother" unit to the Turn A.

A more detailed history is given in the Newtype 100% collection 41 "Turn A Gundam" Vol.2, Kadokawa Shoten, where it is said that Turn X is made by humans who long ago immigrated to other systems for intergalactic travels, the one seen in the show either malfunctioned or was damaged and drifted to earth more than 2345 years before the show. The Earthlings at that time were horrified by the fact that such advance technology existed and far surpassed their capabilities, and they figured that if such a technologically advanced civilization were to hit them with full force, they will have no chance of victory. Therefore they built Turn A Gundam by reverse engineering of the Turn X.[1] Then, the Earth was divided into 2 factions, one possesses Turn X and one possesses the Turn A Gundam, and a war between both sides began. Eventually, the full power of the two suits are released, and the ensuing conflict and a series of political decisions related to it led to all traces of technology between the Earth and Jupiter (save the civilizations on the moon) being completely wiped out. It was also at some point during this final war that the Turn X was defeated in battle by the Turn A and received the X shaped mark that it continued to bear on its chest throughout the rest of its history and use. These events are assumed to have led to the beginning of C.C. 0001.

As a fighting machine, the Turn X was superior to any machine existing at the time (even the System-∀99 (WD-M01) Turn A Gundam ("Turn A" Gundam) ). Its unique construction allowed it to break apart into seven smaller pieces with each one functioning as an individual weapon (similar to bits/funnels), while the Turn A could only detach its core fighter. Turn X lacked a right hand but in its place was an arm with a manipulator possessing three beam emitters that could function as a beam sword, a beam canon, as well as produce an energy blast/disrupter called the Shining Finger; other armaments included a bazooka and a beam rifle. Like its "brother" unit, the Turn A, it too possesses the Moonlight Butterfly attack, capable of sucking energy out of all other units. However, this attack cannot be accomplished alone by both Turn X and Turn A when they first appeared in the show. It is said that the attack has 3 requirements, the nano-machines, the energy to use them and finally the program to activate it. Turn X only have the energy and is missing either the nano-machines or the program, and has to rob the nano-machine or hack into the Turn A system to copy the program(which took place in either Episode 43 or 45, when Turn X got hold of Turn A)[2] and Turn A having only the program and nano-machines but not the energy to prolong usage.[3]

Gym would use the Turn X throughout the end of the Earth-Moonrace conflict, until he had a final showdown with Loran Cehack in the Turn A. When both mobile suits used their Moonlight Butterfly systems during that battle, they were both encased in a large cocoon; Loran was able to escape, but Gym was enveloped with the Mobile Suits.

Trivia

Although never referred to as such in the series itself, the attack where Turn X separates into its component pieces and attacks is always called 'Bloody Siege' when it appears in SD Gundam G Generation games. In the Super Robot Wars series, it is known as All-Range Weld-Off.

G-838 Mahiroo

The G-838 Mahiroo was a mobile suit that was at least 1000 years old. It is unknown who built the Mahiroo, but it's a possibility that it was built before the SYSTEM ∀-99 (WD-M01) Turn A Gundam used the Moonlight Butterfly on the world. Many Mahiroos were discovered in mountain cycles on the Moon and were used exclusively by Gym Ghingnham's forces. The Mahrioo's main weapon was a beam gun on the shield on its right arm. It also had two blades on each arm that were used for close range combat situations. The Mahiroos could also be used on the Earth despite some air pressure problems. One of the most interesting features about the Mahiroo was the cockpit system. The Mahiroo was equipped with both a Mobile Trace System and a standard cockpit layout, which a pilot could easily switch between. Many Mahiroos were used in the last days of the war, most famously by overly obese pilot Sweatson Sutero.

G-M2F (AMX-102) Zssan

On one of the Moon mountain cycles that Gym Ghingnham's forces were exploring they discovered the G-M2F (AMX-102) Zssan. Zssan's specialized in long range bombardments with its many missiles. It also could be fitted with an optional shoulder missile pod for even more missiles, which could be dropped once depleted for added speed. Though the Zssan lacked any short range weapons, the missile launchers in the legs could fire wire-guided cutters as a devastating short range weapon. Zssan's worked in groups of three for a very good reason. Only one of the three units in a team had a pilot, while the other two were remote controlled. It is unknown exactly how this was done. Six units that Gym left on the Moon would only be used in combat once against Dianna Soreil's forces trying to rebuild their Almaiya ship to return to Earth. All of them were destroyed; five of them by Harry Ord personally and his MRC-F20 SUMO. Gym also took several units down to Earth in his war to conquer the divided planet.

They appear to be heavily modified, excavated AMX-102 Zssa units from the 1986 series Mobile Suit Gundam ZZ

G-M1F (XM-0754) Bandit

As the conflict between the people of Earth and the Moonrace continued, the political situation on the Moon changed. An alliance between Agrippa Maintainer and Gym Ghingnham sought to usurp power from Queen Dianna Soriel. During this time, Gym began research on the 'Dark History', and his excavations on the Moon yielded several mobile suits: the CONCEPT-X 6-1-2 Turn X for his personal use, and several G-M1F (XM-0754) Bandit units for his oddly-dressed young pilot Merrybell Gadget. The Bandit's only armaments were a beam saber and a 3-tube missile launcher. However, the Bandit could also be equipped with optional missile launchers on the back. When Gym's forces moved to the Earth they brought down the Bandits, but due to the air pressure they were given a flight booster with a missile launcher on it. The missiles mounted on the back were of a large variety: wire-guided, wire missiles, standard missiles and even missiles that broke into other missiles. An unusual feature of the Bandit was that only one unit required a pilot, while the others were operated through other means, possibly a Mobile Doll System (New Mobile Report Gundam Wing) or a Flash System (After War Gundam X).

JMA-0530 Walking Dome "WaDom"

The JMA-0530 Walking Dome "WaDom" was one of the many suits that the Dianna Counter forces used in their mission to return to the Earth. The WaDom's main armament consisted of a powerful beam cannon, which could fire in short bursts (longer if an external generator booster was attached). The beam cannon was powerful enough to destroy an entire city or even an Aspite ship in one hit. The WaDom was also equipped with missiles and anti air vulcans. Due to the WaDom's massive height of 40 meters it was also very effective in kicking and punching for close range assaults. In case of explosive damage to the main body, part of it could be detached for safety. The armor was even strong enough to be able to stand up to the Militia's airborne force without any damage at all. However, due to their size, WaDoms were rather ineffective against close combat mobile suits. The WaDom was the backbone of the Dianna Counter army, but it was also used by the Moonrace forces stationed on the space station Zacktraeger. One of the first units to be used on the Earth was piloted by Poe Aijee, and her attacks on Inglessa would lead to the awakening of the ancient SYSTEM ∀-99 (WD-M01) Turn A Gundam

MRC-C03 Bellona

The MRC-C03 Bellona was a worker mobile suit built and operated by Moonrace civilians. They were primarily used to carry boxes and similar manual labor tasks, and for added stability they had a tail. Since the Bellonas were designed for labor, they carried no weapons. Moonrace citizens used Bellonas in riots on the lunar city of Ghengnham when the long-forgotten Dark History was revealed to the public. They were also used by Gym Ghingnham's forces to excavate the CONCEPT-X 6-1-2 Turn X and G-M1F (XM-0754) Bandit from the mountain cycles located on the Moon's surface.

MRC-F20 SUMO

When the Dianna Counter forces arrived on Earth to begin colonization, they brought a variety of mobile suits with them, including the MRC-F20 SUMO. One of the most famous during the conflict was the gold colored one piloted by Royal Guard captain Harry Ord. The standard model, however, came in a white-silver color. As the acronym implied, the SUMO was meant for maneuvering. It was short and light weight, much like the Earth Militia's SYSTEM ∀-99 (WD-M01) Turn A Gundam. In fact, both the SUMO and the Turn A shared the same pelvis cockpit system. When Loran Cehack abandoned the Turn A with his Core Fighter, Gym Ghingnham had a SUMO cockpit retrofitted onto the Turn A for use by his own forces.

Though the SUMO was designed mainly for use in space or on the Moon, it was quite versatile on Earth as well. The addition of a skirt-like flight booster allowed extended flight or flight high in the Earth's atmosphere. The SUMO's armament consisted mainly of a powerful hand beam gun, as well as a heat fan that served as a melee weapon. Another weapon in the SUMO's arsenal was the IF generator, a device that allowed the SUMO to create an I-field. When several SUMO units used their IF generators together, it could create a powerful force field to hold another suit in place.

Trivia

Sumo's design was used to be Turn A Gundam's original design, Tomino was shocked by it exoticness and decided to not directly use this design as the main suit. It was revived as Sumo, an arch-rival character's suit.

MRC-F31 (J-2126) Muttowoooo

As the war continued, the Moonrace decided to do some of their own excavation at the many mountain cycles on Earth, such as the one at Ross Mountain. The excavation yielded three MRC-F31 (J-2126) Muttowoooo mobile armors, as well as some nuclear bombs. The Muttowoooo was designed to be used around Jupiter with ramjet engines powered by I-field scoops. The Muttowoooos had a mobile suit mode and could transform into a mobile armor mode for extended flight. The only weapon it had were two heat nata swords which also doubled as beam rifles. The Muttowoooos were immediately transported to the Dianna Counter's flagship Soleil and would later be used in combat against the Earth Militia's forces. Near the end of the war Dianna Counter forces would use more Muttowoooos in combat, though it's unknown whether they discovered more units or produced their own.

NRS-P701 Gozzo

As the war on Earth continued, several factions of the Moonrace on the Moon were displeased by Queen Dianna Soriel's actions. To stir up discord among her soldiers, cryogenically frozen criminal Corin Nander was released and sent to Earth in the TAF-M9 Eagail along with his wingmen Bruno and Jacop in the NRS-P701 Gozzo. The Gozzo was one of the oldest mobile suits used by the Moonrace. Since the Gozzo was originally designed to be used in space, the upper body is gorilla-like. The Gozzo was a small mobile suit, but bigger than the MRC-U11D Walking Dumpling "WaD." The Gozzo's armament consisted of a railgun mounted on the right shoulder, along with two 14-tube missile launchers on both forearms and 3-spike shield mounted on the left shoulder. Both Gozzos were damaged during a mountainside battle with Loran Cehack's SYSTEM ∀-99 (WD-M01) Turn A Gundam; however, they would be upgraded by the Earth Militia into the NRS-P701R Godwin.

After a failed attempt to assassinate Queen Dianna Soriel, Bruno and Jacop would use their Godwins for the Earth Militia, where they stay until the end of the war

SPA-51 Cannon Illefuto

As the war with the Moonrace began in CC 2345, Inglessa leader Guin Sard Lineford directed miner Sid Munzer to search the mountains for mobile suits. His search yielded the AMX-109 Kapool. Also, in the nearby Luziana fiefdom, the ruling Borjarno family was doing the same and uncovered two types of mobile suits: the MS-06 Borjarnon and the MS-06 Borjarnon Gavane Goonny Custom. However, the search for mobile suits was continued elsewhere by civilians. One such suit, the SPA-51 Cannon Illefuto, was discovered by Will Game in a dried up riverbed. In this same area he also discovered a fully intact spaceship, the Willgem, which was named after him. For an ancient suit, the Cannon Illefuto carries a surprisingly power laser cannon mounted over the right arm. While Loran Cehack tried to convince Will to join the Earth Militia, sexy Moonrace assassin Teteth Halleh convinced Will to join with Dianna Counter. Placed under the command of Poe Aijee, Will first took his Cannon Illefuto into battle against the Luziana Militia's MS-06 Borjarnons. Will, an inexperienced pilot, was no match for the Borjarnon pilots and lost his life in the battle.

TAF-M9 Eagel

As the war on Earth continued, several factions of the Moonrace on the Moon were displeased by Queen Dianna Soriel's actions. To stir up discord among her soldiers, cryogenically frozen criminal Corin Nander was released and sent to Earth in the TAF-M9 Eagail along with his wingmen Bruno and Jacop with their NRS-P701 Gozzo suits. In an encounter with Loran Cehack's SYSTEM ∀-99 (WD-M01) Turn A Gundam, Corin was the first to identify it as a Gundam. The Eagail possessed the ability to transform into a dinosaur-like running mode for high speed movement. The flexible spine it employed allowed the Eagail to extend its head for pouncing attacks. Its main armament consisted of an electrically powered Minchi drill, and Corin used it effectively in combat. Other armaments included an optional beam rifle. The Eagail was destroyed in a volcano during an underground duel between Corin and the Turn A. Only the Minchi drill survived the battle and was used briefly by the Turn A and presumably later by Corin's AMX-109 Kapool Corin Nander Custom.
